Not every fantasy novel wants ten volumes of your life. These are complete stories in a single book: begin on page one, finish on the last page, owe nothing to a sequel that may or may not arrive.
About this shelf
Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker is the clearest case: a full arc in one volume, set in the same universe as his longer series but requiring none of it. Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary is self-contained hard science fiction with a locked-room mystery at its center. This Is How You Lose the Time War runs under 200 pages and won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards for Best Novella.
Ken Grimwood's Replay invented most of the time-loop genre and resolved itself in one book. Daniel O'Malley's The Rook opens a series but functions completely alone. Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian is 700 pages and every one of them belongs to the same story.
Also here: Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn, William Goldman's The Princess Bride, and Amal El-Mohtar's The River Has Roots, three books people reread rather than continue.
