Featured in our reading guide: Where to Start with Philip K. Dick
An undercover narcotics agent is assigned to watch himself, and the drug he's taking is splitting his brain in two.
Bob Arctor lives in a house full of burned-out addicts in near-future California, and he's hooked on Substance D. He's also Fred, an undercover agent in a scramble suit, and Fred's latest assignment is surveillance on a suspected dealer named Bob Arctor.
Dick wrote this in 1977 out of his own years among the drug culture, and it's the most personal and heartbreaking thing he ever produced. It's funny in the paranoid, looping way of stoned conversation, and it ends in one of the saddest author's notes in American fiction.
