Featured in our reading guides: Where to Start with Jeff VanderMeer and Books Like Project Hail Mary: What to Read Next

The conclusion of the Southern Reach trilogy, and the closest thing to answers Area X will give.

Shelf note: If Authority lost you, this is where the trilogy pays off. The last hundred pages are unforgettable.

The border is advancing. The Southern Reach has collapsed. What's left of the agency goes back across in a final expedition, and this time the novel refuses to stay in one place. It moves between the lighthouse keeper decades before the Event, the vanished director's childhood on that coast, the biologist's long solitude, and Control and Ghost Bird stumbling through a landscape that has stopped pretending to be ordinary.

VanderMeer doesn't resolve Area X so much as show you enough of its shape to understand why resolution was never available. The book's real subject turns out to be grief: for a coastline, for a marriage, for a world that was already being lost before anything arrived to take it.

People who bounced off Authority often find this one recovers everything. The final hundred pages are among the strangest and most beautiful in contemporary science fiction. Special tenth anniversary edition with a new introduction by Helen Macdonald.

Praise

  • A satisfying conclusion to this captivating trilogy.

    Booklist

  • This trilogy is that rare thing, a set in which the whole is as great as the parts.

    Publishers Weekly

  • I'm loving The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. Creepy and fascinating.

Stephen King on The Southern Reach Trilogy

  • VanderMeer masterfully conjures up an atmosphere of both metaphysical dread and visceral tension... Annihilation is a novel in which facts are undermined and doubt instilled at almost every turn.
