Two princes, one of them a slave, in a court where everyone is lying.
Damen is heir to the throne of Akielos. When his half-brother seizes power, Damen is stripped of his identity and shipped to Vere as a pleasure slave, given to Laurent, the Veretian prince whose brother Damen killed in battle. Laurent does not know who he is. If he finds out, Damen is dead.
What makes the book work is that Laurent is genuinely formidable. This isn't a story where the captor is secretly soft; he's vicious, brilliant, and playing a longer game than anyone at court realizes, and Damen has to survive him while hiding the one fact that would end everything.
Pacat writes political intrigue with real stakes. The Veretian court runs on poison, blackmail, and sexual politics, and every conversation is a move. The first book in a trilogy that built an enormous following for good reason.
Reader note: Adult M/M romantic fantasy. This first volume is set in a slave court and contains non-consensual and dubiously consensual situations, sexual violence, and explicit content. The trilogy shifts substantially in books two and three.
