Featured in our reading guide: Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles in Order (and Where the Mayfair Witches Fit)
The Devil offers Lestat a tour of Heaven and Hell, and asks him to take a job.
Lestat has been stalking a man he intends to kill when he realizes something is stalking him: something that appears as a man in a business suit and introduces itself as Memnoch, the fallen angel.
Memnoch wants an assistant. To make his case, he takes Lestat through the whole of creation: the formation of the world, the emergence of human souls, the courts of Heaven, the suffering of Sheol, and a version of the Crucifixion witnessed firsthand. His argument is that God is not good, that Hell is a mercy, and that the work of redeeming the dead needs more hands.
Rice was raised Catholic and lapsed hard, and this is the book where she puts the entire quarrel on the page. It's the most theologically ambitious volume in the Chronicles and the most divisive among readers. Some consider it the peak of the series, others found it a step too far from the vampires. Nobody finds it boring.
The fifth novel in The Vampire Chronicles.
