An independent online bookstore in Richmond, Virginia. About us Reading guides
Seventeen standalone horror stories in one 576-page paperback from the small press Ink in the Dark. The settings are ordinary: a house, the woods outside town, a memory you were sure was yours, a piece of technology that does its job a little too well. What goes wrong in them is grief, obsession, betrayal and old trauma, and the horror does not always announce itself. Some stories have something supernatural in them, a room that should be empty and is not, a bargain that delivers exactly what was asked for. Others contain nothing impossible at all, and the author says he is not sure which kind is worse.
Dutch's own pitch is atmosphere over spectacle and questions over explanations, which makes this one for readers who would rather be unsettled than startled. Every piece stands alone, so you can read in any order, and at a story a night it lasts two and a half weeks. This is Book One, and the title says more are coming. There is also a very good dog.
